Photo shoot!

Photographed for Second Impulse at Bourbon Street last night! The light guy did not work with me at all, but I was able to get some nice shots of Joe, who has very few photographs as the drummer and the newest member of the band.

Got an interesting light shot with Luke too :)

Success in Alexandria!

Man I gotta keep up with my blog! The school year started and my teaching takes over for a few months. Just came back from the Music and Arts Festival in Alexandria VA and it was a big success! It's a juried show, so I was thrilled to be accepted. I will most definitely be doing it again next year. Great food as well! So stuffed! I recommend it to all who live in the near area.

New pieces soon to come now that I have money to buy materials! :)

Just a late night thought

I was thinking about this tonight and I felt like writing an entry.

I was told once, by the teacher who first introduced me to jewelry-making, that it is important not to make a piece of jewelry just for the sake of a pretty stone, but to rather find a way to incorporate it into a complete design, celebrating the artistic nature of the metal as well as the stone. That this was the distinction between a work of art that is worn and something considered simply "Tiffany's Jewelry."

While that statement is an opinion and I respect those who create jewelry around gemstones, I strive to achieve that "wearable art" idea - it is my core philosophy.

Are there any thoughts about it?

Win a FREE pair of Silver Earrings!

Win a pair of my handcrafted silver earrings when you follow me!

I will pick one follower (new or old) that responds to this post by Friday, May 28th.

Enjoy the blog! Feedback on my website is appreciated!

Where has the month gone?!

Man, it's been a busy month! Between the nearing end of the public school year (my full time job as a teacher), my renter moving out, friend and boyfriend planning to move in, and jewelry show scheduling for this summer, I haven't blogged ALL MONTH!

First, I'd love to get some feedback on my newly designed website. It's designed to serve more for digital portfolio purposes than for purchasing, since I do have my Etsy site.

Also, I've been playing around with my packaging and I'd love feedback on this as well! :)

Below are some of my stone necklace collection pieces. They're different from my full metalwork jewelry....they're a little more "on-trend" and I think that appeals to people (including myself!).... plus they're really fun to wear!

Also..... thinking about doing a free giveaway soon.... Not sure if the better place to do that is on Etsy or my blog. Thoughts??

Website

I am finishing the touches on my new website!!

I'm happy that my work will pay off soon. Just got to figure out a music selection... My two main client types invoke very different music styles and it's going to be hard to choose one that will work for both jewelry and photography.

New Stilted piece, come and gone!

Stayed up for 6 hours creating this beautiful new piece of work.

It sold THE NEXT DAY. It was hard to say goodbye so soon, but I'm happy that it was so appreciated. Guess I'd better work on more in this style. They'll all be different since the stones are unique.

Custom Order Finished!

I finally finished my custom cuff order!! It gave me a lot of trouble. That's the one thing I don't like about these cuffs.... I can do the same thing more than once and some times it'll give me problems left and right, while other times the process is smooth.

The new features on this particular cuff are the two garnet stones set in the spirals. They were pretty easy to set in the bracelet, but I have some better ideas on the rest of the process next time. We'll see....

Spring Fever

It's been a while! Since getting the news of the commission in the mall, I've been feverishly creating! And photographing! Sad to say I have to discourage my ETSY sales just as they were starting to blossom, but I can't do it all. A few orders won't be unwelcome, as long as you are patient at waiting a little longer than my normal 2 weeks for delivery......

Here's a few of the new pieces!

I'm going to do a series of trees, as much as it is a PAIN to cut these things.... broke 4 blades making the two pictured here.... And I haven't broken a blade in months! Some, like the one above, I'm going to solder to colored metals like copper and brass. Might do a silver backing and patina the tree part black...but that's getting very expensive to do. Others, I will leave openly cut like the one pictured below. I like the way they look.

Another heart in my heart series. MY favorite one sold already, but I have the amethyst and I'm growing more attached to it. The one below is a lot more romantic than the last two have been. Not really me, but I know there's plenty of people out there who'll like this one! Rose Quartz is the stone.

This one really isn't new. It's a charm bracelet that I was commissioned to do last summer. I was repairing a charm that had it's link broken when it was caught on something.... Lucky the woman lives near me! Polished it up for her again too. The charms are the zodiac signs of all her children (and her husband). Cute idea she had. I liked it.

New earring design! If you look closely, you can see how they form my initials too! Only partially intentional. :) Designing a necklace to go with the earrings right now!

Big news!

I just got an email from the owner of The Silver Heron and she wants to showcase my jewelry for 60 DAYS this spring!!! I have a LOT of work to do in the upcoming months!

I'm also entered in a juried art show in Richmond VA around the same time I'd be starting the showcase. Now, the owner said that there would be other artists, so I may not be the first one, which might end up working in my favor, but I'll have to see. I'm happy with whatever offer they're proposing. I'd gladly take less up to the art show, (or not at all), for a spot in the COLUMBIA MALL for 2 MONTHS! :) wow

New items

Two new items made during my little blizzard vacation!!! They will be posted on my etsy shop in a few days when I'm ready to let my babies go. :)

The first is part of my cuff/bangle series.

This one was inspired by Jane Austen, one of my favorite authors. It's thinner than my big cuff and it's hammered round instead of oval, so the bracelet hangs like a bangle, but the back is open and therefore adjustable!!

The second is a Blood Stone pendant. The style is very different from the delicate swirly items that dominate my inventory. I hope to add more pieces that are more abstracted or strange since my whole goal is to create for different personalities.

The setting is very different because I could not drill completely through the setting... I had to drill halfway and solder each piece while holding it up with my tongs. Not something I'd ever done before. Happily, it worked and the setting prongs are strong!
On the top, two links soldered through the pendant act as the bail for a chain. I think another asymmetrical chain is in the works to go with this piece!

New designs in the works!

I have new designs in my tumbler now! It's a wire cuff much like my favorite one in my banner. It's a thinner width and a little more like scroll work, very elegant. I'm also planning on making some with stones studded through. Pictures coming soon! Well, as soon as i can take advantage of the sunlight. :)

First Valentine item sold!

Happy Valentines Day to those who celebrate.

I sold my first piece of jewelry meant for Valentines Day this afternoon! It was hard to part with my cuff since they're so hard to make, but I'm happy to sell all the same. I'll just have to make more designs! It's listed as a "made to order" right now on my shop.

What's more romantic than a surprise piece of jewelry? And not just any, but a handmade piece that is completely one of a kind?

Cold Connections

I'm experimenting with cold connections at the moment, like rivets. I just created a new piece last night while caught inside... with blizzard continuing to reek havoc outside.

Drilled through my finger while attaching the riveted flower. Yay. Anyway, I completed the necklace and chain, which took a day.

My concept started with the idea of a pond. The rivet flower added interest to the piece as well as my concept, though it wasn't originally part of my plan.

What I love about this necklace is that the rivets at the top double as a part of my clasp. The side of the asymmetrical chain that has the larger links easily hooks into the hidden rivet on the side of the pendant.

Can't bear to part with it so soon, so I'm not putting it up on Etsy just yet...

New Direction

I've decided to take my blog in a new direction. My photographing days are over for the most part, except for fun. So I will be dedicating this blog solely to my metalworks. Not that anyone's listening at the moment. This blog is feeling more like a diary since I'm basically just speaking to myself. But that's fine for now. I need a regime.

I started a shop on Etsy almost a month ago and got my first sale recently. It seems hard to break into that etsy market - so many talented people in the jewelry category and insufficient ways to be found as a seller.... short of spamming yourself (which I refuse to do). So it's a slow climb, and I'll continue. Who knows? I'm already further along than I thought. If it's done anything, it's driven me to create again on a consistent basis. Seeing all that talent makes me realize that I'm capable of a lot more than I've been putting out. Part of that is due to sheer exhaustion coming home from teaching art all day to kids. The other part is making excuses like that and being lazy/unsure. That stops here.
